A Tale of Two Sisters 2003
(Warning that this write up lowkey sucks because I wrote it 5 min before the assignment deadline) This movie reminded me a lot of Epitaph, especially when it wasn't clear who was impersonating who, or who was actually dead. I was a bit confused on the plot, but I feel like if I watched it again, it would make a lot more sense.
this mirror scene was so well done, showing the dad walking in via the mirror was SO SMOOTH. it literally gives off the impression that they never saw eye to eye
I liked how they used the ideal, nuclear image of family (2 parents with loving children, who mingle with their neighbors over fancy dinner) to contrast how severed their relationships were. There's so much that this movie depicts in how people with mental illnesses are treated too, with the father often trying to get the Su-mi to take her medication to be "normal" and stop acting "weird" again, while the mother (at least to Su-mi) is depicted as also very controlling, and wanting her new daughters to fit her image of a "good" child.
When mixed in with the struggles of growing up, as shown through Su-yeon getting her period, and the general struggle of finding autonomy and control in your life as a child, this reminded me a lot of Dorm. As to be a child is part of the horror.
this scene freaked me the freak out
I loved the colors too, and think that maybe the amber glow at the end represented reality. The glitching effect throughout was really interesting too.
also post note, the twist was crazy. also i'd be afraid of closets too after that. thank you for reading lyjilings
